i don't get the fat free thing... lite and margarine and no whip blah blah... i eat red meat and vitamin D milk and full fat everything... i have tried the fat free thing and realized a few things. it generally has quite a bit more sugar to make up for the fact that it tastes crappy... and also, it just doesn't satisfy... i would rather have one yogurt than need five yoplait fat free extra skinny yogurts to feel full...
now i'm not gonna drink bacon grease or anything but when i think healthy i don't think non-fat. i'm proud of how many vegetables and fruit my household goes through in a week. two full drawers of veggies and one big bowl of fruit. my kids have never eaten mcdonalds or taco bell. that's just gross. but they also eat plenty of butter, milk, and meat and i don't want that to change.
so i'm not a fat free fan unless it is a cholesterol problem... which makes sense...
i'm sure there are many sides to this issue and i'd like to hear them...
ok please discuss...

I only eat fat-free somethings. Yogurts, yes. There is sooooo much sugar in a regular yoplait yogurt. I think my thing is sugar. Not really fat...I eat regular butter, sour cream, cream cheese. I don't know how anyone in your family could ever not eat regular butter, it must be a Molfino thing:) You all love it!
Whole foods are something that I'm very passionate about. I want to know what is in the food I'm putting into my body. So... when I read the labels on something like Cool Whip, no way do I feel comfortable eating that stuff. Basically, if I can't make it I don't eat it, so nothing with anything labeled "High-Fructose" "Hydrogenated" "Polysorbate" "Natural and Artificial Flavorings" to name a few.
I think a lot of people are disillusioned about what "fat free" actually means. It doesn't mean less carbs (usually the opposite in fact), and it doesn't mean no calories.
Anyways, if I'm going to have butter, its going to be butter not "I can't believe its not Butter!" and if I drink milk, its going to be whole milk, preferably raw milk. More calories for sure, but at least I know I'm eating stuff my body was made to process.
Here is a really great article on why fat free foods aren't good for you: http://www.foodandhealing.com/articles/article-fatfreebad.htm
Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Fat free stuff tastes funky. We usually buy 2% milk, but Anthony LOVES full fat milk. Everything in moderation, you know?
totally agree. Full fat yogurt IS THE BEST.
im in between (shocking i know, cominf from the ultimate moderate). i dont buy margarine or snackwells or low fat potato chips... but i have been known to have sugar free pudding and a scoop of fat free cool whip to satisfy a craving for an entire pan of brownies. for me... on occasion its the lesser of the evils. i dont think the chemicals are good for the body tho... and if i didnt feel so strongly about the chemical issue id soooo be drinking 5 diet cokes a day... im a recovering addict, ashamed 2 admit.
fat-free = modified food, which in my book means it's not real food.
Real food, whole food is what our bodies need and not in "american" sized proportions either. In serving size portions. Adding anything to food or taking anything away from it is a bad idea all around - that's what I say anyways.
Kelli - Maybe you should move away from brands like yoplait, because if they don't have a good option, maybe they shouldn't be an option.
There are a ton of companies that are making yogurt the old fashioned way, without any additives. It's just whole goodness.
trader joes has the best yogurt options... and yesss kell... the butter thing is true and a little embarrassing... family curse i guess...
where are the people that disagree with me??
where are the disagree-ers?
maybe Beth can step it up?
ya comon beth... cause a rukus...
I TOTOALLY agree with you! This is where I would like to say something conceited like "and we're like totally hot." but I'll refrain. ;) I lost 30 lbs by cutting out sugar and white flour...I think those are the real culprits! And plus margarine is one ingredient away from plastic! Yeah! I love my fatty food :) it's real and real good. And I agree with you that you can't find lowfat anything that doesn't have a million horrible additives! What's up with that? I guess it makes it taste "better?" It's refreshing to see others agree with this. It breaks my heart to see people drink diet coke.
ummm ya celeste i was going to write about the sugar and white flour thing but i forgot... CUT OUT SUGAR AND WHITE FLOUR AND YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT! i lost my 33 from gabe and then some... although, the "then some" probably came from the anxiety and diarrhea... haha anyways, you all get the point...
I know cutting out sugar and refined flours is the only reason I kept loosing weight after I got pregnant and the only reason I've barely gained any back. I can only hope it keeps working after I have the babe.
Okay,I completely agree, however, I have a confession...Liam has eaten a McDonald's happy meal on occasion :( i hope this holds true as part of the "all things in moderation" argument! great post, especially because I love milk (oh yeah, butter, cheese, yogurt and meat)!
