sponge vs dish cloth

VS

so here is something i'm passionate about... haha...

hell, i'm already worked up and i haven't even hardly started the post yet. ok, there are two kinds of people in the world. the dish sponge people and the right people. apparently the dish sponge people are winning because almost everyone has them and i just don't get it. here is why sponges are disgusting and ridiculous:

they are a harbor for bacteria. the wet moisture just sits and sits with all the nastiness that you "cleaned" imbedded in the cracks and crevices . they stink within a matter of days but most people keep on rinsing them (adding to the moisture problem), and continue to use them. think about the wide variety of things we wipe off of the counter. juice, coffee, rotten food, (or things that become rotten in the sponge), raw meat and it's juices, milk.... etc. GROSS

so the really super determined sponge users think that the microwave is going to fix all of these problems. the smell that comes from the microwave when it is "disinfecting", is enough to tell you that that monstrosity needs to be thrown away. why are we trying to save this gross rectangular germisode? sick sick sick.

ok so apart from the disgustingness, lets discuss the in-practicality of the sponge. the amount of swipes it takes to clean a counter with this little thing is exponentially greater than it is with a dish cloth. my arm gets tired wiping with a sponge... really. (this could have to do with just being out of shape but you get where i'm going.) the dish cloth is bigger and does so much more. with two hands you can manuever that baby and clean so much more efficiently. you can rinse it out completely and wring the water out. then you simply place it over the faucet to dry and it actual does; unlike the sponge that sits in a puddle of wetness. plus after two days or so, you throw the cloth in the wash and get a fresh one out. pretty simple.

and when you try to wash dishes with the sponge, your hands get burnt by the hot water because they have to actually be on the dish. there is no space between you and what you are washing. stupid. isn't this a MUCH better and somewhat obvious choice:

so there are my reasons against sponges and for dish cloths/brushes. now give me yours. which of you are sponge users and most importantly WHY???!?!?!?!? as with everything in my life i'm going to try to keep an open mind.

Ha, ha! Very fun!

Hmm...I'm actually a "both" kinda gal. A sponge is handy (the ones that have a scrubby side) when I'm cleaning the stove or microwave. The towel goes for almost everything else. Here's the thing though--I wash them BOTH on hot (and often with bleach) in my washing machine on a super frequent basis. (Okay, so my husband actually tosses them in, but that's beside the point.)

I hate germs.

I'll be honest... I've NEVER EVER used a dish cloth in my life. I love sponges because of the scrubby thing but also I'm a freak about always replacing my sponges. I buy them in bulk at Costco and I go through about one a week. And the one that I am using for that one week gets soaked in bleach every other day... or sometimes every day depending on what I've done with it. I don't believe in disinfecting it in the microwave and every once in a great while I'll throw it in my dish washer and put it on the "sanitize" cycle. And also, I never ever wipe my counters with a sponge. That's sick. And you know me.... I'm a FREAK. I'm obsessed with cleaning... so there you have it.

I like this post. :)

I'm a total sponge user too:) At the end of the day I always throw the sponge into the laundry and replace it with a clean one. When I do whites, I throw in the sponges and they get washed with bleach and I dry them in the dryer as well. I thought that was what everyone did until I started dating Jerad and he was amazed by my little protocol:)

Mostly I use sponges for things like cleaning the micro/stove, sink, dishes, or if there is something really messy on the counter. If I'm just wiping the counters down, I like to spray some cleaner (I use vinegar/water) on them, then wipe with a dry dish cloth because it doesn't leave wet marks like a sponge would. I'm also a fanatic about washing the dish cloths...

I use them all! I have a scrubber that has dish soap in it for quickly washing dishes (you know, not plugging up the sink and doing tons at a time). I color-code my sponges for when I'm actually doing the sink full of dishes. I have a yellow sponge for glasses and utensils, a blue one for bowls and plates, and a green one for cookware. I then have special purple sponges for counters. And yes, I microwave my sponges after each use.

But you've brought out the germ freak in me. I think I have to go throw my sponges away!

You need to be careful. Usually, once symptoms of germaphobia have begin to manifest, it's too late for conventional treatment. It will not be long before your fear of the sponge is spread to the wash cloth and the brush. Germaphobia, in extreme cases, has ultimately caused some sufferers to surrender their whole identity to bottles of bleach. I would suggest treating this condition by living at a campground for no less than one month. For most germaphobes, this treatment has resulted in a peaceful sense that most restaurant restrooms are clean enough to eat in.

I use a sponge and I don't care about the germs :)

PS, but ANYTIME there's meat ANYTHING involved, I use a disposable Clorox wipe and toss it.

chris your hilarious... HILARIOUS...

bethany you made me laugh too... it's not so much the germs i mind as the stinkiness and rotting food... i'm not worried i'll get sick or anything... it's just grosses me out... i'd rather eat and indian's homemade cooking with their left hand than touch the nastiness that is the sponge...

So, i'm commenting on your sponge thing. I actually do use sponges BUT... I buy them in bulk and have a one time use policy. I dont use them on my counter tops only for dishes then toss em because i do agree that they are gross when used again, & again. But I think using a cloth is gross too.. but i'm wierd about that stuff.
